Streamline Smart Meter Verification & Re-Verification with Sieco-Tech

Sieco-Tech-Smart-Solutions-Made-to-Measure

Long-term smart meter verification and re-verification continue to be core operational challenges for sub-metering companies and building managers.

Every six to 10 years, regulations from Measurement Canada mandate that multi-tenant electrical metering systems be re-verified for accuracy. While essential for compliance, this process has traditionally been a costly, disruptive and time-consuming necessity.

For the average electric sub-meter on the market, this process has continued to be a nightmare. It requires killing the power to a resident's suite, undoing all the wiring, installing a new meter, carefully reinstalling all the wires, and hoping no mistakes were made.

What’s more, most smart energy meters are still engineered in a way that this work disturbs the critical S-E-O4 field installation seal, meaning you’ll need to make a field call to an accredited company to re-inspect and re-seal the unit.

That’s why Sieco-Tech carved out a better way.

Sieco-Tech Smart Energy Meters make Re-Verification Simple

Driven by innovation, in-suite electric meter systems by Sieco-Tech were designed from the ground up to solve real-world challenges our clients face in the field. This includes Sieco-Tech’s In-Suite Residential Single Point (RSP) and Commercial Single Point (RSP) meter systems, and their counterpart, the new RSP-mini.

The result is a simple re-verification process that can be completed in under five minutes. Here’s how it works.

Modular Design

RSP/CSP and RSP-mini meters are laid out differently from other revenue-grade electricity sub-meters. Sieco-Tech technologies use modularized internal compartments to house different components of the smart meter.

Sieco-Tech single-point in-suite smart meters feature a separate meter head, which contains the hardware, electronic system, and battery. The base frame houses the unit’s battery, communications module, and live electrical wiring. The RSP-mini includes its communication card in the meter head.

The meter heads on the RSP/CSP snap onto the meter base and can be easily detached from the meter base for exchanges, service work, sampling or upgrades. This has a critical implication for the RSP’s regulatory seals.

  • The S-E-O2 Accuracy Seal: This seal is applied by the manufacturer to secure the meter’s digital system after S-E-02 testing, ensuring the unit measures electricity within Measurement Canada’s tolerance levels.
  • The S-E-O4 Installation Seal: Applied in the field over the wiring terminal cover, to secure and ensure the safety and integrity of the installation itself.

Smart Meter Verification & Re-Verification

Because the Sieco-Tech RSP’s meter head can pop off, the head can be exchanged without removing or breaking the S-E-04 seal applied to its meter base.

This is a game-changer, as it eliminates the need for scheduling and compounding costs associated with inspections to re-verify the unit whenever the meter is disturbed or during the S-E-02 smart meter re-verification process.

Faster, Easier Field Service & Swaps

However, it also means easy service or an exchange without accessing or handling electrical wiring and connectors housed in the meter base. This means avoiding the wasted time and inconvenience of disconnecting power, unwiring and rewiring an exchange unit.

It also means that removing an RSP/CSP meter head can be completed by technicians, rather than requiring a licensed electrician.

Proving the Promise: Pursuing the 10-Year Seal

The RSP/CSP is designed to perform for more than a decade with minimal service. Batteries can be easily replaced in the field without breaking seals, and their other components are graded to perform over the life of the meter.

A product built for decades of reliability deserves a certification to match. That’s why Sieco-Tech is pursuing an extended 10-year initial seal period from Measurement Canada for our RSP meters. If approved, these smart energy meters will have an additional four (4) years before requiring S-E-02 re-inspection.

This summer (2025), Sieco-Tech completed a large-scale program on 250 RSP meters that have been in service across numerous properties over the last several years. The rigorous testing process is overseen by Measurement Canada and aims to confirm that a meter model’s energy-measuring tolerance remains accurate well beyond the standard six-year requirement. Final results from the testing are expected later this year.

Securing a 10-year seal will be a major milestone for the RSP, as meter re-verification costs and logistics remain a significant pain point for sub-metering operators. More importantly, it will validate years of efforts by Sieco-Tech devoted to innovation in the sub-metering industry.

Just as importantly, when RSP/CSP seals finally do expire, our customers can turn the traditionally massive undertaking into a simple, five-minute swap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is smart meter verification?

Smart meter verification is the process mandated by Measurement Canada to ensure a meter accurately measures energy for billing. This includes initial S-E-02 verification (the "Accuracy Seal" from the manufacturer) and periodic re-verification.

What is meter re-verification?

Re-verification is the mandatory re-testing of a meter's accuracy after its initial certification period (typically 6-10 years) expires. This S-E-02 process is required to keep the meter legally in service for billing.

What if my meter is past its certification date?

According to Measurement Canada, a meter with an expired verification seal is no longer legally approved for billing. It must be taken out of service and either replaced with a verified meter or undergo S-E-02 re-verification to be re-certified.
